The reports you are publishing in the news paper related to NRI
marriages are outrageous and biased.
I am fed with the false reports on NRIs so writing the truth. There are
some unscrupulous people everywhere in the world, NRI men and women are
not an exception, everybody should be aware of them.I used to believe
these stories till now but changed my views when my close friend got
into similar situation.
I have seen number of cases where brides get into arranged marriages
without consent, reasons may very well be parents force or cover up of
love affairs in the society or NRIS may be safe heaven/cover up to
depressed/psychologically ill brides as NRI bridegroom wants to finish
the entire marriage episode in 2 to 4 weeks time. So by the time truth
comes out bride's relatives make up the dowry harassment case to
hide the truth as well as to extort the money. If the similar law exists
in US, almost all the US men would be behind bars multiple times as they
go through multiple marriages/divorces in life time.
The following is a true story:
NRI gets into wedlock with in 15 days after arrival in India.
Bride seems to be good and in-laws shows 10 lakhs property on her name.
Bride, who never traveled out of their hometown, and parents all are
happy and sends her to US with bridegroom. NRI comes to know her
sleeping tablets consumption and suicidal attitude with in a month.
Informs the in-laws and in-laws ignores the call as they already knew
it. NRI gets into self defense and takes her to the Psychiatric
hospital, somewhat cured.
Bride goes back to India pretending homesick and gets further treatment.
NRI told she is perfect now and bride comes back to US again, same
situation arises.
Bride goes back to India and everybody comes to conclusion that if she
goes go to US she might commit suicide or health condition will worsen
so divorce is the only option as bridegroom is not interested to come
back to India and stay in their in-laws house which may be another
alternative.
Now bride's family threatens to file dowry harassment case and
publish in news papers to hide the truth as well as to extort the money
(Note that the money 10 lakhs which promised is still with bride) Now
everybody is with Bride's side as most of us are feminists including
me.
What is the alternative to NRI is to face the dowry harassment case
(498a which is also called `legal terrorism') and get jailed and
fight the case for years by making frequent trips to India and spoil the
entire life or pay the money and go on with the life ...
You guess the first alternative is picked up by NRI upon well wishes
pressure …. So there goes another bad NRI is being created in the
society.
Another true story:
NRI gets into wedlock to a very well educated woman after searching for
2 years, he was given 15 lakhs dowry (not by demand).
After returning to US first few months everything is fine.
Bride gets green card and job and started earning money.
Somehow dislikes the husband thinks her old boyfriend is better.
Quarrels with husband and goes to India and asks him to come to India to
settle the matter.
As soon as he arrives in the airport police picks him up and put him in
police station and girl demands for 25 lakhs otherwise he will be
charged with dowry harassment case.
Guess what, his relatives are informed and they had to pay the money and
come out of jail as well as wedlock.
You can find number of marriages which ought to be failed for some
reason will be accounted for dowry harassment cases which is similar to
all suicides in a village are accounted for farmer's suicide due to
debts and all gunned down people by cops accounted for encounter deaths.
Please don't publish these biased reports just based on police press
conference and further damage the image of the NRIs, please do the
background check before reporting. Interview the real people including
husbands of the so called victims, just don't publish based on the
second hand sources. There are several reports saying that 98% of the
dowry harassment cases are false and are misused to extort money, the
severity of the problem is so grave that US department of state has to
put a travel warning to India on their website (Link:

for the dismissal of charges. The courts normally confiscate the
American's passport, and he must remain in India until the case has
been settled. There are also cases of U.S.-citizen women of Indian
descent whose families force them against their will into marriages
to Indian nationals. "
